Sterlite Copper has commissioned the first phase of a railway siding project adjacent to its copper smelter plant at Milavittan at a cost of Rs 25 crore.
The first phase, comprising a 7 km track length connecting the smelter unit with the main line, is expected to streamline traffic within and outside the plant premises and reduce costs by increasing efficiency, a company press release said.
It would help the company transport all finished and byproducts like copper, gypsum and slag to various parts of the country and also help minimise the loss of goods during transit.
The second phase is expected to be commissioned by October, 2012. It will be equipped with a track hopper system, an improvement over the conventional wagon tippler system, to reduce the interval between loading and unloading, it added.
Project completion will also help Sterlite import raw materials through the railway link for its smelter and power plant operations.
Its 160-MW (2x80 MW) coal-based power plant is expected to be commissioned by March, 2012. The company plans to maximise inward and outward movement through the link, the release said.
