Car-major Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Monday said that production at its plant in Gurgaon had been impacted because of the strike at Suzuki Powertrain India Ltd (SPIL), which supplies engines to MSI.

As a result, the company's Gurgaon plant is likely to produce around 1,800 vehicles on Monday, a loss of 1,000 units.

“The law and order situation at Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant continues to be grave,” the company said in a statement.

The workers have indulged in random acts of violence like beating up company managers, supervisors and those co-workers who are not supporting the strike, the statement alleged.

On Sunday, MSI had dismissed 10 workers, terminated five trainees and suspended 10 employees in connection with the strike and violence at the Manesar factory.

On October 1, MSIL workers at the Manesar plant agreed to sign an agreement with the management ending over a month of deadlock that began on August 29.

As per the agreement, MSI agreed to reinstate 18 suspended trainees but refused to take back 44 regular employees who remained under suspension.

The workers, in turn, signed the ‘good conduct bond', which required them to declare that they would “not resort to go slow, intermittent stoppage of work, stay-in-strike, work-to-rule, sabotage or otherwise indulge in any activity, which would hamper normal production in the factory''.

Close to 2,000 workers at the Manesar plant and 6,000 workers from different factories of the Gurgaon-Manesar industrial belt, (including Suzuki Powertrain India Ltd, Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd ) went on a sit-in-strike on Friday, demanding that their colleagues, both permanent and contract, be reinstated.

Losses Mount

The company claims to have rescued 500 workers from inside the factory premises, with the number of striking workers inside the facility coming down to 1,500. “About 170 regular workers have stayed away from the strike from the start,” the statement said.

The production loss suffered by the company since Friday is pegged at 2,500 units valued at Rs 75 crore. The factory normally rolls out around 600 units daily.
