United Breweries’ net profit has grown nearly 39 per cent to Rs 98.64 crore for the first quarter of this fiscal because of double digit growth in various States and a 23 per cent increase in strong beer. The company in a filing with the BSE said that total income went up 28.63 per cent to Rs 1,225.82 crore. While mild beer volumes fell 9 per cent, overall volumes were up 14 per cent. The company noted that its sales in Tamil Nadu continue to be affected because of unfavourable ordering pattern of TASMAC, the State arm that manages liquor purchases. UBL said that Maharashtra and West Bengal recovered strongly from excise duty increases of the previous year. States that showed double-digit growth include Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Kerala, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
