Alstom T&D India has won a contract worth about €16 million (Rs 108.8 crore) from Power Grid Corporation of India to supply auto transformers. Under the contract, the company would provide ten 765 kV 500 MVA 1-ph auto transformers.

These would be installed at two locations at the 765kV Gas Insulated Substation situated at Vemagiri, Andhra Pradesh, and 765kV Air Insulated substation at Vindhyachal, Uttar Pradesh. All equipment will be manufactured and supplied from Alstom T&D India’s facility at Vadodara, the company said in a statement.

India’s southern grid has been facing significant power shortages over the last few years due to inadequate transmission capacity from the rest of the grid. The transformers located at Vindhyachal will help transmit power from the surplus energy in the northern region to southern region.

In addition, the transformers installed at Vemagiri will strengthen the transmission system of the southern grid.

Alstom T&D India’s greenfield facility at Vadodara was inaugurated in March 2009. This facility has since ramped up production capabilities to supply more than 200 units of 765 kV transformers and shunt reactors to various clients like PowerGrid, state utilities and private generating companies.
