Bajaj Auto has extended the earlier deadline given to the workers’ union at its Chakan plant for resolving issues that have caused them to be on strike since June 25, by another three days.
Last week, the management had fixed August 12 as the deadline, failing which, it had threatened to consider the permanent transfer of 50% of Chakan production to its other plants at Aurangabad and Pantnagar. August 16 has now been set as the final deadline.
Over the last week there have been several rounds of discussion between representatives of the union and the management, in an effort by both sides to resolve the strike at Chakan. That deadline expired yesterday without a satisfactory result being achieved, Bajaj Auto said.
In a statement issued today, managing director Rajiv Bajaj said, “COO Pradeep Shrivastava has informed me that both sides are hopeful of arriving at a mutually acceptable solution in the next two days. He has therefore requested me to extend the deadline. Consequently the final deadline will now be August 16 after which the management can, and will, take all such steps as it deems necessary to protect its future business interests.”
In an appeal to all workmen at Chakan not to suffer any further on account of what are entirely irrational demands, but to instead rejoin their duties at the earliest, he said the Company had made all the necessary arrangements to ensure their safety and convenience.
