Bharat Earth Movers Ltd (BEML) said 47 per cent of all the metro coaches in India are made by it. Deepak Kumar Hota, Chairman and Managing Director, BEML, addressing the ‘Opportunities for Industry in Defence’ meet organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) at the BEL Campus, said India is at the crossroads of huge economic growth and for the country to capitalise on the opportunity it needs to ensure employment for its huge demographic dividend.
“We require the right policies to catalyse industry and ensure employment. The government needs to concentrate on developing the right skillset among our employable youth. Industry needs to look at how it can collaborate and work together to bring about indigenisation in the defence sector,” he added.
BEML has joined hands with the Railways and the Department of Science and Technology to set up a centre of excellence in Bengaluru at an investment of Rs 300 crore. Hota urged the Karnataka government to participate in the project, which will soon be a world-class testing facility for railway equipment and coaches.
