Air-conditioning and commercial refrigeration major Blue Star sees a further drop in contribution from the commercial segment in 2012. Last year, the drop was a little over 20 per cent.

Attributing the drop in business to the general slowdown in construction activities in the country, Mr B. Thiagarajan, President, Blue Star Ltd, said IT and ITES companies too went slow on manpower addition. “If one person is recruited, the company concerned will have to air-condition 75 sq. ft. of office space,” he explained.

According to him, last year the commercial segment contributed only 35 per cent with the rest coming from the residential category. “We expect this to go down further to 30 per cent this year.”

The silver lining is that the residential segment is growing reasonably well and Blue Star would hence focus more on this segment in the future. The company is planning to make its products available in more outlets, particularly in tier II and tier III cities and even smaller towns.
