The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has issued a red corner notice to the Interpol against liquor baron Vijay Mallya of now defunct Kingfisher Airlines, a day after Britain told the Indian government that it will not deport him.

The agency has sent the red corner notice for publication to Interpol on a request made by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the CBI sources said on Thursday. On Wednesday, the British government had informed the Ministry of External Affairs that it will not be able to deport Mallya, who is facing arrest for defaulting on bank loans worth more than ₹9,000 crore.

The Ministry had sent Mallya’s deportation to the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) on April 28, following the revocation of his diplomatic passport.

“FCO has said that the crown prosecution services would be willing to discuss the key issues to consider with our high commission,” said MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup here on Thursday. He said the Ministry was now awaiting ED’s advice on the “next steps” in Mallya’s case.

The UK had said that under their Immigration Act, an individual does not require a valid passport to remain in Britain.
