CLP India is likely to step into ‘solar’ with the purchase of 100 MW of solar power plants from Suzlon.

Sources in CLP confirmed discussions but said there was much distance to cover before a deal was finalised.

Suzlon, India’s second-largest wind turbine manufacturer, made its maiden entry into the solar space in January by winning rights for developing 210 MW of solar plants in Telangana.

The company had always said it would develop solar projects and sell them to energy companies, just as it does for its wind business. Suzlon counts its experience in developing renewable energy projects and its immense land bank among its advantages.

The 210 MW of projects consist of six different capacity projects to be located across the State. This includes one project of 100 MW, one of 50 MW and four of 15 MW each.

These projects shall be commissioned in FY 2016-17.

Hong Kong-headquartered CLP (formerly, China Light and Power) is among the larger foreign investors in the Indian power sector. CLP India operates a 1,320 MW coal-fired power plant at Jhajjar, Haryana, and a 655 MW gas-based plant in Gujarat. In addition, it owns over 1,000 MW of wind power projects across the country.
