Riding on better demand for their products during December, the country’s two-wheeler manufacturers reported double-digit growth (except Bajaj Auto) on year-on-year (YoY) basis and are expected to continue the trend.
For instance, the country’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer Hero MotoCorp on Tuesday reported sales of 4,72,731 units in December against 3,30,202 units in the corresponding month previous year, registering a growth of 43 per cent.
The company sold a record 72,07,363 units of two-wheelers in January-December 2017, it said.
“This has clearly been reflected in the strong demand pattern for our motorcycles and scooters. We are now entering the last quarter of this fiscal with a strong focus on the premium segment and scooters and we are confident of sustaining our growth momentum,” said Pawan Munjal, Chairman, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Hero MotoCorp.
The second largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the country Honda Motorcycle & Scooter will share its numbers on Thursday.
Bajaj Auto reported a growth of 6 per cent YoY in its motorcycle sales at 1,12,930 units in December compared with 1,06,665 units in December 2016.
Tamil Nadu-based Royal Enfield sold 65,367 units during the month, up 16 per cent against 56,316 units in the same month previous year.
Suzuki Motorcycle India (SMIPL) also reported 53 per cent growth in its sales in December to 32,786 units against 21,362 units in December 2016.
“With over four lakh sales completed in this financial year already, we are well-poised to achieve our annual target of five lakh sales annually. For Suzuki Motorcycle India, 2017 has been a special year,” said Sajeev Rajasekhran, Executive Vice-President, Sales and Marketing, SMIPL said.
Meanwhile, some of the passenger car companies also shared their sales numbers on Tuesday, including Tata Motors and Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM). Tata Motors reported a growth of 31 per cent in its December sales YoY to 14,180 units compared with 10,827 units in December 2016.
“We are happy to start the new year with a strong growth momentum. With a growth of 31 per cent in December 2017, we have recorded highest ever sales in December since 2012, backed by our portfolio of new generation products like Tiago, Hexa, Tigor and Nexon,” said Mayank Pareek, President, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors.
In December 2017, while total bookings were highest since 2012, retail sales grew 74 per cent over last year – highest since December 2011, he said.
However, TKM did not end the year in a good note by reporting sales of 10,793 units, down 15 per cent YoY against 12,747 units in December 2016.
Similarly, Ford India also reported decline in sales in December to 5,087 units as compared with 5,566 units in corresponding month previous year.
Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor India and Mahindra & Mahindra had reported sales numbers on Monday.
