Essar Power Ltd’s combined operational capacity is set to increase from 4,590 MW now to 6,100 MW by 2020 at its various power generation plants where expansion is in progress at various stages.

The company is investing nearly Rs. 30,000 crore on this expansion, KVB Reddy, Chief Executive Officer, said here on Tuesday.

“Also, Essar Power Gujarat Ltd (EPGL), a subsidiary of the holding company EPL, is contemplating to increase its capacity from the existing 1,200 MW at the imported coal-fired Salaya thermal power plant in Devbhumi Dwarka district near Jamnagar, to 2,520 MW at an additional investment of Rs.7,000 crore in the near future, depending upon “conducive policies and atmosphere”, said Ramesh Kumar, Managing Director, EPGL.

This expansion will be based on super-critical technology.

However, Kumar said Essar Power Gujarat’s expansion was still at the “drawing board stage”, and gave no timeline for this expansion. EPGL caters to 9 per cent of the demand in Gujarat.

Out of its total generation capacity of 6,100 MW, 3,105 MW will be coal-based and 1,600 MW gas-based.

The operating plants are at Mahan (MP), Hazira, Salaya and Vadinar (all in Gujarat). A 1,200 MW pit-head plant at Tori in Jharkhand is also under development. EPL also operates an 85-MW power plant in Canada.

EPGL, for the first time, had turned profit-positive in 2015-16 with a net profit of Rs 39 crore. This year, with a Rs 1 crore net profit in the first quarter, it is expected to close the fiscal with increased PAT.

Essar Power’s coal providers include South Africa, Columbia, Russia, Mozambique, Indonesia, and Australia.
