Essar Steel India has commissioned a 19 MW heat recovery power plant at Hazira.
The plant will use the heat generated in the manufacturing process, (hot briquetted iron waste heat recovery boiler and surplus steam from blast furnace boilers) to generate electricity.
The power generated will be used for internal consumption and help reduce power cost for the company.
Mr Dilip Oommen, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, said, “Our focus is to have facilities which are both, cost efficient and environment friendly. Our new plant is helping us to save the cost of generating 19 MW of power – enough power for almost 10,000 homes.”
The company will also benefit with the availability of carbon credits due to the reduction in emission of greenhouse gases. Also, it can utilise the power more effectively without any transmission losses or leakages.
Essar Group had set up a similar facility at Essar Steel Algoma Inc, Canada, where the company has a co-generation facility. The learning in Canada helped Essar replicate the facility in India, the company said.
