US-based solar cells and modules manufacturer and solar power projects developer, First Solar, has said it would set up 5,000 MW of green energy projects in India by 2019.
A “commitment” to that effect was given by First Solar to Prime Minister Modi at the RE-Invest 2015 event in Delhi today.
The company has 200 MW of solar power projects in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. “The overall commitment is of course contingent upon the government providing PPA allocations from utilities by way of enforcing RPO’s as well as the land and evacuation infrastructure under the solar park policy”, said Sujoy Ghosh, Country Head, for First Solar India.
Incidentally First Solar has been in the news recently with a major deal in the US - Apple Inc. has committed $848 million to buying solar electricity from the company for the next 25 years—one of the largest commercial deals in the solar sector.
Commenting on the commitment to India, First Solar’s global CEO, James Hughes, said that solar presents “a very compelling opportunity” to provide sustainable and affordable energy solution to Indians.
