The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed its Central Licensing Authority of Northern region to issue a show-cause notice to Patanjali Ayurved for misleading advertisement for its mustard oil and violating the FSS Act, 2006.

This development comes after the Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA) had filed complaints against the company with FSSAI and the Advertising Standards Council of India.

Submit report

The FSSAI has also asked its central authority to submit its report on the issue at the earliest.

The association had alleged that Patanjali Ayurved’s claim in its advertisements including “most of the other edible refined oils and mustard oil are made using Neurotoxin Hexagon solvent extraction process to make profits at consumer’s health” are totally incorrect and misleading consumers.

The SEA, which made the FSSAI’s order public on Wednesday, had also in its complaint said that the advertisement wilfully wants to create panic in the mind of consumers against solvent extracted oils and refined oils.

Already ASCI, has pulled up Patanjali Ayurved for various advertisements including the one for mustard oil.

The ASCI’s Consumer Complaints Council upheld the complaint against Patanjal’s mustard oil ad stating its claim was misleading and not substantiated.
