State-promoted Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Ltd (GACL) on Thursday reported an increase of 84 per cent in profit after tax (PAT) and 18 per cent in sales in the second quarter of 2011-12, ended September 30, 2011, as compared to the corresponding quarter in the previous fiscal.

On Thursday, GACL's share price at the BSE closed 0.42 per cent up at Rs 141.90.

In a statement here, Mr M.S. Dagur, Managing Director, said the sales in the second quarter were Rs 417.16 crore (Rs 351.61 crore), despite competitive market conditions, while PAT stood at Rs 37.06 crore (Rs 20.12 crore) mainly due to improvement in price realisations for caustic soda and other groups.

CDM projects

He said the company had already got three projects registered with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) under Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Projects and has taken action for a few more projects, including wind mill projects, to be registered during 2011-12.

The engineering work on the two lakh TPA chlromethanes project, based on Dow Chemicals' technology, is going on in full steam. The company's projects with an investment of Rs 2,600 crore are expected to go on stream by FY 2014-15.
