General Motors will launch its compact sedan Chevrolet Essentia in 2017, with plans to take on the competition in the A-segment, General Motors Executive Vice-President and President GM International Stefan Jacoby said here on Wednesday.

The company also showcased a soft-roader concept based on the same platform, called the Chevrolet Beat Activ, at the expo.

“India is a high growth market and we will launch 10 new vehicles in five years,” Jacoby added. The two cars, designed at the GM Korea Design Studio, are targeted at the Indian consumer while also ensuring strong global appeal.

GM India President and Managing Director Kaher Kazem said: “We are heading into a new era with new-generation products that will catapult the Chevrolet brand in India, giving consumers vehicles that have never been seen in the market. Our aim is to ensure that our models are more relevant, better connected, more exciting and safer than ever before.”

Both cars have features such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system. Jacoby said GM India is committed to increasing the localisation of its vehicles built here to over 85 per cent in five years while increasing exports from 21,000 units in 2015 to 50,000 this year.
