Private companies such as Essar Power, D B Power and Hindalco Industries got a major relief on Tuesday after a review committee found their coal blocks adhering to timelines. These companies have received second stage of environmental clearance for their blocks.
Essar Power and Hindalco Industries together hold the Mahan block in Madhya Pradesh, whereas D B Power was allocated Durgapur II-Sarya mine in Chhattisgarh.
On the other hand, 10 other companies holding 8 coal blocks have been given nine months to seek stage-II environment clearance.
These companies include Jayaswal Neco, Tata Steel, Adhunik Thermal Energy, Abhijet Infrastructure, Usha Martin, Nilachal Iron and Power, Bajrang Ispat, JSPL, JSW and Bhushan Power and Steel.
Recently, Government has decided to take away mines awarded to nearly 50 companies including Adani Power, JSPL, Tata Group, Rungta Mines, Arcelor Mittal, Lanco, Hindalco, GMR and others.
The Government’s move follows Attorney General Goolam E. Vahanvati informing the Supreme Court on last month that nearly 41 coal blocks allocated to private companies would be taken back if they did not obtain environmental clearances within six weeks.
