Tata Motors said on Thursday the Gujarat government has issued orders prohibiting a workers’ strike at its Nano car factory in Sanand and directed the workers to resume work immediately. The State government has referred the issue to the Industrial Tribunal here.

The development seems to have revived Tata Motors stocks, which surged over 6 per cent on the BSE on Thursday to close at ₹336.35.

“We hope this will help restore normalcy at the earliest,” said a company spokesperson. “While we are yet to study the order in detail, we believe it supports our viewpoint that the discussions must be only through lawful means.”

About 300 workers of the 2,200 employed at the plant went on a flash strike on February 22, demanding the reinstatement of a colleagues suspended for alleged misconduct. Several rounds of talks between the management, labour commissioner representatives and striking workers had failed.
