Honda Cars India (HCIL) said on Thursday that it will voluntarily replace Takata passenger front airbag inflators of 1,90,578 vehicles of the previous generation of Accord, CR-V, Civic, City and Jazz.
HCIL has recalled 3.12 lakh units of vehicles since 2014 because of faulty Takata airbags, a company spokesperson told BusinessLine .
The latest recall includes 1,37,270 units of ‘City’ manufactured between 2008 and 2011; 22,483 Accords ( 2003-2011 models); 15,706 units of Jazz ( 2009-2011); 13,605 Civics (2007-2011); and 1,514 CR-Vs (2009-2011).
Some of the vehicles were part of the earlier recall. If calculated on the basis of number of airbags only, the number may cross more than four-lakh units.
Asked if the company is still using Takata airbags in the current models, the spokesperson said “We are using airbags of multiple vendors…Only few Takata airbags are used in few models.”
HCIL said that the replacement will be carried out free of cost at HCIL dealerships in a phased manner. “While the campaign for CR-V and Civic will begin immediately, the replacement of inflators for other affected models would begin from September, and the company will communicate with customers directly,” it said.
The customers can check whether their cars are covered under this campaign by submitting their 17-character alphanumeric VIN on the special micro-site which has been created on the company’s website, it said.
