The Activa scooter, introduced in the Indian market by Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt Ltd (HMSI) in 2001, has become the first scooter to achieve the one crore unit sales milestone in the country.
The first two-wheeler launched in India by Honda, and beginning with sales of 55,000 units in the first year, Activa has reactivated the dying Indian automatic scooter market and clocked sales of 2.1 million units in FY 2014-15. The company is now the market leader with 59 per cent market share in the scooter segment, HMSI said in a statement.
Keita Muramatsu – President & CEO, HMSI, said, “From reactivating the scooter segment in India in 2001 to leading the scooterisation of industry today, Honda’s iconic Activa has changed the way Indians ride.”
“A decade ago who would have bet that a scooter would once again be the largest selling two-wheeler in India. But today, Activa has broken the glass ceiling. It is only automatic scooter which has become India’s No 1 Selling 2-wheeler (in June’15, July’15). Secondly, Honda has become the first manufacturer to sell more than 2.5 lakh scooters in a single month ever in July’15. We believe this demand for automatic scooters will continue to rise,” Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Senior Vice-President, Sales & Marketing, HMSI, said.
To meet future demand, Honda will continue to innovate its products and services, he added.
