Hooq debuts in India with video streaming service

Hooq India, a video streaming service, is making its India debut targeting consumers who want contents on the go as it works to get the regional flavour and pricing right in the Indian market.

Hooq said it will invest $10 million (₹63.6 crore) to grow in the Indian market besides pricing its services at ₹199 per month to convert users from pirated to a subscription-led model

Hooq is a result of collaboration among Sony Pictures Television, Warner Bros and Singaporean telecommunications company Singtel Group. The platform will offer Hollywood movies, television series and regional content.

Peter Bithos, CEO, Hooq told

BusinessLine , “Consumers want content that is easy to use and which has quality. Convenience and high quality content is what we are looking to provide.”

The platform will also offer regional content from India, China, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Korea and Japan. The company said it has over 5,000 Hollywood titles and television content.

Krishnan Rajagoplan, India Head said Hooq is also looking to tie up with players like YashRaj films to assemble Bollywood titles. The company is also looking to aggregate content from regional film industry.

He also said that the nature of tie up will range from licensing to one time purchase among others.

“We have already roped in about 60 Indian partners and 100 international ones,” he added.
