Hyundai Mobis, part of Hyundai Motors India, which handles distribution of spare parts for its brand of vehicles, plans to expand its network to counter fake components coming into the market.
As part of this drive, the firm appointed its fifth authorised Indian distributor in Hyderabad, which will service the Andhra Pradesh market.
“In the next four-five months, we will be appointing distributors in Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. We have already issued Letters of Interest,” P.S. Bhumak, General Manager, told Business Line .
Hyundai Mobis supplies spare parts through its distributors to 360 dealers in India, who in turn supply to over 600 service outlets. It has four warehouses, including in Chennai, Mumbai and Karnataka.
“We are trying to increase the share of genuine Hyundai spare parts. Currently, about 30 per cent of the market for Hyundai car components is being fed by fake parts,” he said.
Most of the manufacturers of fake spare parts are from India, with some volumes coming from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and even Korea. These parts are packaged and branded in the original style.
Raids conducted
“During a recent raid on one such manufacturer, we came across fake oil filters for Santro, which were sealed from the outside and looked similar to the original. But on breaking open the seal, we discovered there was no filter at all. Such parts damage the vehicles and shorten their life-span,” Bhumak said.
He said the company, which clocked a turnover of Rs 950 crore last fiscal, aims at a revenue of about Rs 1,200 crore this year. It aims to increase the share of genuine spare parts from 70 per cent to 75 per cent this year through better distribution network, raids on fake manufacturers and customer awareness programmes.
