Fifteen years after it started production in the country, Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) today rolled out its five millionth car from its Irrungattukottai plant near Chennai.
“The five-millionth car roll-out is an important milestone and a symbol of Hyundai’s long-term commitment to the Indian market,” HMIL Managing Director and Chief Executive B S Seo said in a statement.
Out of the total five million, 62 per cent were sold in the domestic market and 38 per cent were exported, the company said.
HMIL began production in the India in 1998. It has made a total investment of $2.7 billion and has a total production capacity of 6.8 lakh cars in India. Its turnover last year stood at $5 billion and the company directly employs 9,500 people.
“We will continue to focus our efforts in the Indian automobile industry through investments and world—class products,” Seo added.
