Hindustan Zinc plans to plant 70,000 saplings at its Rampura Agucha zinc mine in Rajasthan.
This was part of the company's green initiative to plant one lakh saplings in the next seven days.
Hindustan Zinc already houses over 12 lakh plantation in and around its business locations.
Inaugurating the company's plantation drive, Mr. Onkar Singh, District Collector, Bhilwara, offered to make available wasteland to further support the company's plan.
Accepting the Collector's offer, Mr. Akhilesh Joshi, Chief Executive Officer, Hindustan Zinc, said the plantations need extra care to ensure that they survive the extreme temperature of up to 45 degrees prevalent in Rajasthan.
Mr. L.N. Ranawat, District Forest Officer, said there is an urgent need for plantation drive in Rajasthan as the forest area in the state is about seven per cent compared to 33 per cent in most states.
As part of its environment-friendly initiative, Hindustan Zinc produces about 25 MW of power through the waste heat recovery process and generates 275 MW of wind power.
The project is registered under Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and is entitled for carbon credits.
The company's plants operate on zero discharge and are now heading towards zero waste, said Mr Joshi.
