Veterinary biological company Indian Immunologicals Ltd (IIL) is planning to set up a new animal vaccine making facility in Pondicherry.
The proposed unit, which will be its fourth in India, is likely to require an investment of between ₹200 and ₹300 crore.
The company, which is part of the National Dairy Development Board, yesterday launched India’s first vaccine for blue tongue disease afflicting the sheep and goat population. It has one unit in Ooty and two in Hyderabad.
“We have acquired a 30 acre piece of land there (Pondicherry). We will set up unit as the country’s demand for various animal vaccines increases,” T Nanda Kumar, chairman of NDDB, said here today.
The company is currently working on six potential vaccines, including one for classical swine fever or hog cholera, a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease afflicting pigs and wild boars.
“This vaccine, which may take a couple of years to development is meant for the pigs population in the north-eastern states,” G.S Reddy, chief general manager, said.
