Plans are afoot to generate revenue by entering into tie ups with retail companies to market products made by prisoners, according to T.P Das, Director-General of Prisons and Correctional Services.
He was speaking to reporters here on Monday after inaugurating the second outlet of the Indian Oil Corporation, opposite central jail, completely manned prisoners.
He said Tihar jail authorities had signed an agreement with Reliance to sell products made by inmates.
“We are also planning similar agreements with companies to sell a range of products including fruits and vegetables grown in prisons,” he said.
He said the first IOC outlet in the State manned by prisoners was opened at Kadapa and the second here. Three more such IOC outlets would be opened at Warangal, Charlapalli and Chanchalguda jails. On the proposed shifting of Rajahmundry jail, he said the Government would have to take a decision. A sum of Rs 20 crore would be spent on the jail.
IOC Executive Director P.M Nazeeruddin said Rs 70 lakh was spent on the outlet. Prisons Inspector-General B. Sunil Kumar said 30 trained prisoners would man the outlet and all should encourage it to give a chance to prisoners to reform themselves.
