The Bombay High Court gave its verdict in favour of Parle Biscuits for the usage of lactic acid in Kaccha Mango Bite Candy, based on the construction of the provisions of The Food Safety and Standards Act. The verdict establishes that lactic acid is absolutely safe to consume in hard boiled candies.

In October this year, the Food and Drug Administration had raided the Parle Biscuit’s manufacturing unit at Nashik and Khopoli and wrongly confiscated stocks of Kaccha Mango Bite candy across Maharashtra.

Following the incident, Parle approached the Bombay High Court to support its claim that lactic acid is safe for consumption and can be used in Kaccha Mango Bite candy. The company also presented facts saying that lactic acid is widely used in several food items of daily consumption such as curd, infant milk based formulations, bread, paneer, processed cheese, tomato ketchup, garlic and onion paste.

Kaccha Mango Bite was launched in 2004 as an extension to Mango Bite.
