Pune-based engine and genset manufacturer Kirloskar Oil Engines Ltd (KOEL) and Germany-based engines maker MTU Friedrichshafen, GmbH have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for exclusive cooperation on the building and commissioning of emergency diesel gen-sets (EDG) for possible future requirements of Nuclear Power Plants (NPP) in India.

“The signing of this MoU keeps us prepared for the next phase of emergency diesel gen-sets for NPP in India,” R R Deshpande, Executive Director, KOEL, said.

According to the agreement, MTU Friedrichshafen, a part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, will supply engines and key components, and take responsibility for basic engineering and gen-set configuration. KOEL will integrate the systems and assemble and test the gen-sets on site in India.

“Working together with KOEL, we see good chances of gaining entry into the emergency gen-set market for nuclear power stations in India,” Dr Michael Haidinger, CSO, Rolls-Royce Power Systems said in the statement.

KOEL has already delivered 20 emergency gen-sets to nuclear power plants in India and is today the only Indian company supplying high capacity gen-sets to NPCIL.

MTU has successfully completed numerous projects in the field of nuclear power and its emergency gen-sets operate in several nuclear power plants in Europe, China and Russia.
