Engineering and construction conglomerate Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) has won a major order valued at $273 million from Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) for the supply and construction of 13 extra high voltage (EHV) sub-stations in Qatar.
The order, a part of Qatar’s power transmission system expansion phase 10 (stage I) project, is the single largest secured by L&T’s power transmission and distribution division in a GCC country, a news report said.
The project, which will be completed in 18-26 months, includes gas insulated switchgears of 220 kV, 132 kV and 66 kV; associated cabling, including external EHV cable diversion works; power transformers, 11kV air-insulated switchgears and a protection and sub-station automation system, including a DC system and auxiliaries, the Gulf Times report said.
The contract also involves the design and construction of civil buildings with a complete set of utilities such as air-conditioning and fire protection and lighting systems.
According to the report, L&T President, Mr K.V. Rangaswami, expects that Qatar will present tenders for 40-50 major projects, including road and construction works, next year.
The company workforce in the Gulf region will increase by 50 per cent a year, he said, adding that work opportunities in Qatar are very promising for the coming years.
