The country’s largest construction services provider Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) has emerged one of the major EPC turnkey solutions provider for the sunrise sector of solar power generation and is looking at offering deployment solutions of large rooftop systems for third parties.

The company has contracted more than 200 MW of grid connected EPC projects, both under the National Solar Mission and State-promoted schemes of Gujarat and Rajasthan, according to a company official.

Speaking on the sidelines of Solarcon India 2011 at the company pavilion, he told

Business Line that the company’s capabilities in construction and as an EPC contractor for several areas, including the power sector, have come in handy.

This has helped the company take up projects in the solar power generation business. The company adds value by system integration, project management and in-house manufacturing capability of structures for the EPC business.

L&T has set up a research and development centre in Chennai, which now serves as a test bed to validate some of the competing technologies and solutions. In fact, by demonstrating the practical aspect of each technology be it thin film or modules, we help business prospects decide on the right technology and also provide them with guidance as a consultant during the project implementation, he said.

FINANCIAL SERVICES

The turnkey services cover not just solar photovoltaic systems but also solar thermal power projects and take away the headache of deployment for the company. This is also coupled with financial services, he said.

“We are currently deploying a 1 MW rooftop solar system in Chennai and expect to complete it early next year,” he said.
