Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has delivered 12 dry shielded canisters, used for the storage of radioactive waste from nuclear power plants, to the US-based Transnuclear Inc.
“L&T executed the first order of dry shielded canisters from Transnuclear Inc, USA, an Areva company, for the storage of radioactive waste,” the Mumbai-based firm said in a filing to the BSE.
However, the company did not provide the total value of the order.
L&T said the canisters are intended for leading US-based nuclear utilities and have been manufactured in accordance with the US Code of Federal Regulations and Nuclear Safety Class One standards.
“Apart from these 12 canisters, L&T is ready to despatch an additional two for the next order,” the company said.
Canisters are used in boiling water reactors for the storage of radioactive waste from nuclear power plants.
L&T has been manufacturing critical nuclear components like nuclear reactors, steam generators, control and drive mechanisms, heat exchangers and valves for over 40 years now. It has a permit to design, manufacture and construct nuclear island equipment as per American standards.
