Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), a Coal India subsidiary, has spent nearly Rs 22 crore over the last two fiscals for tree plantation in Odisha.

According to a company release, MCL has contributed around Rs 8 crore to the Odisha government’s Corporate Financed Plantation Schemes for three forest divisions during 2016-17 and another Rs 14 crore for six forest divisions during 2017-18.

The company has been following a three-prong strategy to increase the green cover, said B Sairam, General Manager (CSR), during a CII conclave organised recently in Bhubaneswar.

Besides contributing to state schemes, MCL also distributes saplings for plantation among stakeholders and compensates the forest department against land acquired for mining coal. MCL contributed Rs 267 crore under CSR last fiscal (FY18).
