Three weeks after it launched the next generation electric car e2o on Indian roads, Mahindra Rewa has said that it expects to sell around 6,000 units of the new vehicle in India in the first year, and begin exporting it to key global markets subsequently.

Speaking at the launch of e2o in Pune, the fourth city in India after Delhi, Bangalore and Cochin that it will be available, R Chandramouli, Chief of Operations, Mahindra Rewa Electric Vehicles Pvt Ltd said that exports will begin from 2014.

“We will launch it in eight cities in India in the first phase,” Chandramouli said, adding that Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh and Hyderabad were the other four cities on the e2o road map. Sales will be through 24 dealerships that have been identified.

The geographies targeted for export are mainly European countries where the company has already sold a significant number of the 4,500 Rewa cars – the forerunner of the e20 - that have rolled out of the Bangalore plant. The Rewa has now been phased-out, and at current capacity, Mahindra Rewa’s plant can make 30,000 units of the e2o annually.

Amongst the other initiatives M&M has chalked out to boost sales of the e20 are tie-ups with dealers, group companies IT hubs, malls etc to set up charging infrastructure. It is also going to offer an exchange facility for the Rewa through its used car dealership network.

In Pune, the new 2-door electric car, whose features include automatic transmission, a 100 km range on a full charge, navigation systems and the facility to be connected to the driver’s smart phone, is priced at Rs 6.7 lakh, ex-showroom.
