Kerala-based jewellery retailer Malabar Gold is looking to set up manufacturing facilities in the jewellery hubs of Coimbatore and Kolkata.
The company operates manufacturing units in Kerala (Kozhikode and Thrissur) and UAE (Sharjah). These units spanning 30,000-50,000 sq feet each, contribute to just 10 per cent of Malabar Gold’s overall jewellery requirements.
These units make only basic mass products. Specialised products and handcrafted jewellery are sourced from goldsmiths and vendors across the country, especially Kolkata, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Kerala and Coimbatore.
“In the long term, we are targeting 50 per cent to come from own units,” said Mr Abdul Salam, Group Executive Director.
The company is scouting for a location in Coimbatore. The facility is expected to come up in the next six months. Post this, Malabar Gold will also explore manufacturing options in Kolkata and Maharashtra.
