Putting to rest speculation on whether he would chair United Spirits’ annual general meeting, Vijay Mallya not only did so but also came out unscathed on Tuesday. The company’s board had asked Mallya to step down on charges of financial irregularities.

Sources in United Spirits, now majority owned by Diageo, said the management is in talks with Mallya to get him to step down from the board. Mallya, who will turn 60 shortly, told reporters that at that age one tends to take it easy, retire and enjoy life. He said he was thinking on similar lines, though he did not say if he would step down.
