The automotive major Mahindra & Mahindra has launched its new model of the SsangYong Rexton Rx6 powered by manual transmission and indicated that it is working on a new breed of engines and models.
It plans to offer the new luxury sports utility vehicle at ₹20.11 lakh ex-showroom. Rexton competes with the likes of Toyota Fortuner and Hyundai Santa Fe.
Arun Malhotra, Chief Sales and Customer Care Officer, said: “The Rexton is the No.2 selling brand in the high-end sports utility vehicle segment during 2013-14. We expect the launch of the new model with five speed manual transmission on the 2.7-litre engine and a range of high tech features will help garner a bigger share.”
The market for high-end SUVs is estimated at 2,000 cars a month during 2013-14. The Rexton is a high-end SUV from the South Korean company SsangYong stable. SsangyYong is part of the Mahindra group after its acquisition in 2010. Addressing a press conference, Malhotra said, “Researchers at M&M and SsangYong are working together in India and Korea to develop a family of six engines to be used in new cars.”
Referring to the M&M SUV business, he said that in spite of growing number of automotive companies offering SUVs, M&M has managed to retain its share of 45 per cent in the last three months.
