The country's largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki has reported a whopping 61 per cent increase in sales in August.
The company sold 87,323 vehicles which included exports of 11,305 cars. Exports trebled last month.
The numbers look quite high because sales during the corresponding period in the last year took a hit on account of industrial unrest at its factory.
If one looks at the sales from April to August, the figures are up by just 3 per cent to 3.96 lakh cars.
Domestic sales of cars by Maruti Suzuki in August was up 51 per cent at 76,018 cars.
Nearly half of that was in the entry segment or the so-called A segment - which saw about 32,019 cars being sold as against 22,062 cars in the corresponding month last year.
The compact segment that includes the models - Swift, Estilo and Ritz saw a three- fold growth to 17,409 cars. But utility vehicles that include Gypsy,Ertiga declined 34 per cent to 4,563 units in the month. Sale of vans (Omni, Eeco) was also down similarly to 7,956 units.
The Maruti Suzuki stock was up 4 per cent or Rs 49 to touch Rs 1,293.60 at around 3 p.m.
