Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) on Wednesday launched its premium car, the S-Cross, priced between ₹8.34 lakh and ₹13.74 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The new car will be available only in the diesel options of 1.3L (DDiS 200) and 1.6L and sold from its dedicated showrooms for premium cars Nexa.

While the DDiS 200 is priced between ₹8.34 lakh and ₹10.75 lakh, the DDiS 320 is available at ₹11.99 lakh to ₹13.74 lakh (all ex-showroom Delhi), the company said.

MSIL and its suppliers have spent ₹600 crore to develop the new car.

The new car from the Maruti’s stable will not only compete with the likes of Volkswagen Polo Cross and Hyundai i20 Active, but also with other segments such as compact sports utility vehicles of Hyundai’s latest Creta, Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano.

MSIL said the S-Cross has ABS, all wheel disc brakes and dual airbags as standard across all variant and fuel efficiency of 23.65km/litre in DDiS 200 and 22.70km/litre in DDiS 320 (as per tests conditions).

“A segment of customers in India want power and performance in their vehicle, but also the comfort and refinement of a sedan. It is in that spirit today we are launching the S-Cross,” Kenichi Ayukawa, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, said here at the launch.

He said the company hopes to further increase its market share from 45 per cent with the launch of this car.

It expects to sell around 4,000 units of the S-Cross per month.

The car has got bookings for 6,000 units (since July 8) and 35,000 enquiries so far, he said.

MSIL would add various premium models that would be sold through only Nexa outlets, said RS Kalsi, Executive Director, Marketing and Sales.

He added that the company has 35 outlets operational across 23 cities, and target is to reach 100 showrooms across 30 cities by end of this financial year.

“By the festival season (around October), we will have around 75-80 Nexa outlets and we will cover 85 per cent of the country by 100 showrooms by end of this fiscal,” he said.
