The country's largest passenger car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) on Friday reported a 24 per cent growth in domestic passenger vehicle sales during May to 1,61,497 units, as compared with 1,30,248 units in the same month last year.
The growth was mostly led by the compact segment (including the Swift, Baleno and Dzire), which grew by 51 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to 77,263 units during the month as against 51,234 units in May 2017.
The utility vehicle segment also recorded double-digit (13 per cent) growth YoY to 25,629 units as compared with 22,608 units in the corresponding month last year. However, sales of its mini segment (Alto, WagonR) declined by 3 per cent YoY to 37,864 units during the month as compared with 39,089 units in the same month last year.
Sales of its mid-size sedan Ciaz also declined by 15 per cent YoY to 4,024 units last month as against 4,724 units in May last year. MSIL sold 1,703 units of its light commercial vehicle Super Carry during the month as compared with 428 units in May 2017. The company exported 9,312 units of vehicles during the month as compared with 6,286 units in May 2017.
