The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) today posted a 13.3 per cent rise in total sales in April at 1,26,569 units against 1,11,748 units last year.

The company’s domestic sales increased by 16.2 per cent during the month to 1,17,045 units against 1,00,709 units in April 2015.

The sales were mostly driven by the compact segment (like Celerio, Swift and Baleno) which grew eight per cent year-on-year (YoY) to 45,700 units last month compared with 42,297 units in April 2015, the company said in a statement.

Sales of utility segment also grew exponentially (260 per cent) because of new launches like S-Cross and Vitara Brezza last month to 16,044 units compared with 4,452 units in the same month last year.

Sales of mid-size sedan Ciaz also grew 22 per cent to 5,702 units during the month against 4,662 units in April last year.

“We are happy to begin this fiscal on a positive note. Driving this robust growth for Maruti Suzuki are the new premium offerings Ciaz, Baleno, Vitara Brezza and S-Cross. Communicating a new design philosophy, powered with new technologies and innovations, some of these products are on wait list,” R S Kalsi, Executive Director, Marketing and Sales, MSIL, said.

The company is making all efforts to improve the availability of Baleno and Brezza to customers on time, he added.

However, sales of mini segment (Alto and WagonR) declined 10 per cent YoY to 31,906 units as compared with 35,403 units in April 2015.

Exports during the month declined by 13.7 per cent to 9,524 units against 11,039 units a year ago
