McNally Bharat Engineering Co Ltd will construct three stations in the southern leg (or the phase I) of the Rs 2,619-crore Joka-BBD Bag Metro link in the city.

The company said it received an order from Gammon India Ltd, the winning bidder for the contract, for the construction of Behala Bazar, Taratala and Majerhat stations. The contract also includes all related civil works.

The cost of building the three stations, to be complete by 23 months, is Rs 81.11 crore. The letter of intent has been issued early this week. The original tender was wrapped up in January.

According to sources, unlike elsewhere , land procurement for the three stations in the southern leg (or the phase I) is not a stumbling block. “Railways, private and State Government lands could be acquired without much trouble for the first few stations,” said a source involved in the project.

The letter of intent for these three stations related mechanical and electrical work would also be issued shortly.

The much-touted 16.75-km city rail project, linking city's South-Western tip with Central Business District, is facing delays over land acquisition in the northern leg (or phase II) of about 5 km stretch of the project.

In the southern leg, there will be 4 more stations at Behala Chowrasta, Sakher Bazar, Thakurpukur and Joka with a depot at Joka, southernmost end of the proposed line.
