A minor fire was reported at Reliance Industries Ltd’s (RIL) old Jamnagar refinery in Gujarat but it was immediately brought under control.
The fire broke out during maintenance work at a crude distillation unit (CDU) at the older 33 million tonnes a year refinery yesterday, a company official said
The unit was shut for maintenance when the fire broke out and it was immediately brought under control, he said, adding that there was no loss of production as CDU was shut anyway.
CDU would be restarted as planned on December 22.
RIL has two refineries at its massive Jamnagar complex — the older unit that caters to the domestic market and a new 29 million tonnes per annum, only-for-exports (SEZ), facility.
The two adjacent plants are the biggest single location refinery complex, constituting about 1.6 per cent of global refining capacity.
RIL is planning a separate maintenance at the SEZ unit sometime in first quarter of 2013.
It may shut a 13.5 million tonnes per annum CDU at the refinery for 40 days besides also closing naphtha hydrotreater, vacuum-gasoil hydrotreater and a delayed-coker unit for maintenance.
