Seeks ₹640 crore worth damages

The National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission (NCDRC) on Wednesday allowed the Centre to conduct fresh tests on 16 samples of Maggi Noodles, which will be conducted at Mumbai.

The Centre was seeking tests of 50 samples of Maggi Noodles, out of the 100 packets seized by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India.

The commission has directed these 16 samples to be sent to the Export Inspection Laboratory, Mumbai. It said that the laboratory will test and analyse the samples of Maggi Noodles and tastemaker for lead and MSG.

NCDRC is hearing the class-action suit filed against Nestle India by the Government of India, and seeking damages worth ₹640 crore.

In a statement, Nestle India said, “We are disappointed that the Commission has given order directing further testing of 16 samples at Export Inspection Laboratory, Mumbai.”

It added that the reports for all 13 samples provided by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs that were sent to accredited government referral laboratory CFTRI, Mysuru, for testing as per the Order of the Commission, are still awaited.

The NCDRC, which is also awaiting a report on tests conducted on Maggi samples conducted by Mysuru-based Central Food Technological Research Institute on Maggi samples, has now posted the matter for hearing for January 12.
