Driven by new launches during the month, several automobile manufacturers recorded double-digit growth in May.
In the passenger vehicle sales, Maruti Suzuki India reported a growth of 24 per cent over the year-ago period at more than 1.61 lakh units (1.30 lakh units).
Hyundai Motor India reported a 7 per cent growth at 45,008 units (42,007 units).
With the successful launch of the new Amaze, Honda Car India reported 41 per cent growth at 15,864 units, a positive growth after many months. The company had sold 11,278 units in May 2017.
Similarly, Toyota Kirloskar Motor also reported 20 per cent growth in its sales post the launch of its mid-size sedan Yaris, taking the total sales to 13,113 units during the month (10,914 units).
“We are happy to have achieved a growth of 20 per cent in the domestic sales in the month. Along with the segment-leading products Fortuner and Innova Crysta, Yaris has been a significant contributor to the overall positive sales growth as compared to the same period last year,” said N Raja, Deputy Managing Director, Toyota Kirloskar Motor.
The company had dispatched 4,000 units of the newly launched Yaris sedan during the month, he said.
Home-grown Tata Motors reported a 61 per cent growth at 17,489 units (10,855 units).
Mahindra & Mahindra and Ford India also reported positive numbers in the passenger vehicle segment.
In the two-wheeler segment, market leader Hero MotoCorp reported a growth of 211 per cent at 7.06 lakh units (6.34 lakh).
‘Activa’ maker Honda Motorcycle & Scooter also grew marginally to 5.19 lakh units (5.10 lakh). Chennai-based TVS Motor Company also recorded single-digit growth.
However, others, including Bajaj Auto, Royal Enfield and Suzuki Motorcycle India, recorded double-digit growth.
The commercial vehicle segment also saw double-digit growth by most companies.
