Italian auto maker Piaggio today expanded its scooter range in India with the launch of a new model ‘Vespa VX’, priced at Rs 71,380 (ex-showroom Delhi).
The company, which is present in India through a wholly-owned subsidiary-Piaggio Vehicles, currently sells one scooter model — Vespa LX in the country.
“We hope to further strengthen the premium segment with the Vespa VX,” Piaggio Vehicles (India) Chairman and Managing Director Ravi Chopra told reporters here.
He added that since the launch of the first Vespa model last year in the country, the company has so far sold 52,000 units of the scooter.
“After the success of the first phase in Vespa launch with a single model just over a year ago, Piaggio is now moving into the second phase for the expansion of the product range,” Chopra added.
When asked if the company is planning to further expand the scooter range in the country, Chopra said, "There can be another product launch by the end of this year. We want to have different products for different consumer needs".
He added that the company would like to cater to the premium scooter segment and was not planning to venture into the commuter segment.
“We are looking to create a premium luxury segment (in scooters) which is non existent at the moment,” Chopra said.
The Vespa VX model is powered by 125 cc engine developed by Piaggio exclusively for the Indian market. It comes with various features like front disc brakes and tubeless tyres.
