Pink slips, yes, but we also hired 15,000 people: L&T

Larsen & Toubro (L&T), India’s largest infrastructure company, had hired over 15,000 employees and 4,200 trainees across the group during the 12 months ended September 15.

This comes against the backdrop of a massive retrenchment exercise the company undertook in April-September.

L&T said last month it had laid off 14,000 employees in April-September to stay “agile and competitive” while dealing with economic challenges.

The group — which straddles across construction, EPC projects, capital equipment, switchgear products, IT services and technology services — will continue to increase its manpower going forward, L&T said in a statement.

“Our manpower resources across businesses is a blend of permanent company employees, augmented by a large number of contract employees engaged in specific projects. Our manpower structure is designed to give us the flexibility to ramp up our manpower,” said SN Subrahmanyan, L&T Deputy Managing Director and President.

“On a continuous basis, we realign the capabilities of our manpower resources with the needs of our markets. This often requires retraining employees to ensure that their skills remain relevant,” he added.

Further, the L&T Leadership Development Academy at Lonavala trained about 68,600 professionals in FY16. The group, which has 65 skill development centres across the country, employs many of them.

“With the government actions towards streamlining the macroeconomic factors that will stimulate growth in the Indian economy, we look forward to actively participating in India’s ambitious plans in infrastructure, smart cities, defence, nuclear and thermal power and more,” Subrahmanyan said.
