Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) has commissioned the transmission system for evacuation of power from India's first Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) at Mundra in Gujarat.
The system commissioned on Thursday consists of high capacity Mundra-Bhachau-Ranchodpura 400 kV double-circuit line along with 630 MVA Bhachau 400/220 kV sub-station, part of the transmission system associated with the Mundra UMPP being implemented by PGCIL at an estimated cost of about Rs 5,000 crore, the company said.
India's largest private power producer Tata Power Company Ltd is expected to commission the first unit of 800 MW in the next few weeks and another of 800 MW by February 2012. PGCIL will evacuate this power to be supplied from the national grid.
About 770-km-long transmission line has been commissioned in challenging conditions like passing through rough terrains in creek area of the Arabian Sea, severe right-of-way problems, excessive water-logging due to heavy rains, etc, said Mr D.S. Singh, Executive Director of Power Grid Corporation.
