Reliance Industries Ltd, which has a pan-India licence for providing broadband services based on Long Term Evolution technology, will use its broadband network to support the requirements for homeland security, according to the company's annual report.

The oil major pointed out that there is a need to support the efforts of the country's law enforcement agencies with realtime electronic and digital solutions and it is working with global partners to bring state-of-the-art homeland security solutions to the Indian market.

Long Term Evolution (LTE) is a 4G advanced technology having capability to pack more bits per hertz of spectrum, thereby providing better throughput and network capacity, which will drive down the unit cost of delivering bandwidth.

The security applications and services can draw benefit from the advantages of assured quality of services that are integral to 4G networks. The traditional security platforms have been found to be inadequate in addressing the new challenges associated with global terrorism, the report said.

In 2010, RIL acquired a 95 per cent stake in the equity of Infotel Broadband Service, which was the only successful bidder in all of the 22 circles in the Broadband Wireless Access (‘BWA') auction conducted by Department of Telecomm.
