Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd’s (RJIL) Managing Director Sandip Das, entrusted with the task of furthering the fourth-generation (4G) ecosystem in the country, is moving to Reliance Retail.
“I am delighted and excited to be invited to join the board of Reliance Retail and mentor the Jio division within Reliance Retail. The business will provide cutting-edge support to Jio, aligning valued customers of both companies with Reliance's unmatched scale, solutions and strengths,” Das said.
The Long-Term Evolution (LTE) eco-system for devices in India is nascent and devices are the cornerstone in bringing broadband to the masses, he said, adding it will be “wonderful challenge for me to mentor this".
RJIL, the wireless arm of India’s largest private sector company Reliance Industries, is gearing up to launch 4G services in the country this year. Mumbai-based RJIL, controlled by industrialist Mukesh Ambani, holds 1800 MHz spectrum across 14 circles and 2300 MHz in 22 circles.
Ambani, in a letter to employees welcoming Das to retail, said devices are the cornerstones in bringing broadband to the masses and will take deep conviction and substantial expertise to create such device ecosystem.
“Sandip Das with his vast knowledge of marketing and sales, particularly in telecom, is uniquely placed to mentor this exciting and valuable strategic initiative,” Ambani’s letter said.
Das, a telecom industry veteran, had worked with GSM operators Aircel and Hutchison-Essar (Vodafone India).
In March last year, RJIL’s head of innovation Arvind Rao had quit to pursue his own entrepreneurial dreams. Rao, who co-founded value-added services provider OnMobile Global had joined RJIL in November 2012.
In December, RJIL received security clearance from the Department of Telecommunications to start 4G-based broadband services in six circles, but with riders. The security go-ahead was the last major clearance the company needed to commence the services.
The DoT granted RJIL permission to start data services in Kolkata, Karnataka, Bihar, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. The operator’s demonstration of Lawful Intercept and Monitoring (LIM) system in these circles was found to be adequate, though there were some concerns.
