Set-top boxes too will come under the eagle eye of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in the next few months.

These power-guzzling boxes, which are procured (usually from China and South Korea) by DTH service providers and multi-system operators, do not have any certification for their energy efficiency levels.

The Government agency had set up a special committee to study and develop standards and a star rating model for these boxes.

According to Mr S.P. Garnaik, Energy Economist, BEE, the panel has now come out with a model and it is now being circulated among various stakeholders.

“It is expected to be finalised in the next 4-5 months' time,” he said.

To start with, the agency will award star ratings only to set-top boxes used in the DTH sector. However, he said cable TV set-top boxes too will soon come under the radar.

Set-top boxes that have more features such as processing of higher definition signals and recording, reportedly consume more power. Industry experts say energy efficiency is not just a function of the hardware.

The embedded software in it and how the consumer uses the box also can make a difference.

According to Mr Ajay Mathur, Director General of BEE, there are designs and technologies available in the market which can make “efficient boxes”.

Star rating will certainly help to ensure that manufacturers of these boxes employ efficient designs and technologies.
